Fort Atlantic, the carefully-crafted brainchild of Jon Black, started out as no more than an experiment. After his small label closed in 2009, Black tested his own limits for two years as a musician and producer. He built a studio in his own home and began writing and recording music constantly, releasing three EPs under his own name and playing the bulk of the instruments on those releases. Once he had finished recording late last year, Black took the music to mixer and producer Tom Schick (Wilco, Ryan Adams, She & Him), which resulted in Fort Atlantic’s self-titled debut album.
The final result is a compelling mixture of “heartbeats and hard drives,” as Black mentions. His strengths as a songwriter and lyricist are present through both simple, acoustic guitar melodies and ambient reverb. “Up from the Ground” features ample amounts of those elements, while the nine minute “I’m Wrong (Everybody Knows It)” irresistibly showcases his electronic side.
Fort Atlantic won’t be available until May 29, but you can stream the album in its entirety below.
