Song Premiere: Old Crow Medicine Show - "Mississippi Saturday Night"

June 26, 2012  |  1:00pm

Nashville-based bluegrass outfit Old Crow Medicine Show—a band known to busk on streets even as they sell out the Ryman—bring a certain kind of down-and-dirty energy to everything they strum out. There’s a sense of spontaneity in their traditional music—something that continues on their latest record, Carry Me Back.

“Each of these songs was an accident waiting to happen,” Old Crow Medicine Show member Ketch Secor says of the band’s 12 new tracks.

The group teamed up with producer Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Dropkick Murphys) in Nashville’s Sound Emporium, a studio that housed recordings of the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack and Alison Krauss and Robert Plant’s Grammy-winning Raising Sand.

Big names and acclaim, however, haven’t smoothed out the band’s rugged enthusiasm. “Mississippi Saturday Night” is a Southern tall tale that boasts the same furious picking, hooting and hollering they’ve brought to the table since their early hit “Wagon Wheel.”

Carry Me Back is available for pre-order on iTunes starting today and is set to be released on July 17 via ATO Records. You can get a taste of the new album with this stream of “Mississippi Saturday Night” below.
