Song Premiere: Tift Merritt - "To Myself"

July 24, 2012  |  11:00am

For her fifth full-length album, singer/songwriter Tift Merritt assembled quite the cast: a five-piece band of collaborators that have worked with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Iron & Wine, Calexico, The Jayhawks and more. Oh, and Andrew Bird stopped by for an appearance, too.

“I really wanted to make a record that was real and raw,” Merritt says of the making Traveling Alone. “I wanted to put together my dream cast and see if I could hold my own with them.”

By the sound of “To Myself,” the first single off of Traveling Alone, she’s having no trouble keeping up: the song’s crunchy guitar parts and layered percussion never overpower Merritt’s serene vocals. Recorded in Brooklyn with producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket), Traveling Alone is about a personal journey not easily captured in postcards.

“To me,” Merritt explains, “Traveling Alone is about the roads on the inside—those places that are hard to see and not easy to send postcards from.”

Traveling Alone is set for release on October 2 via Yep Roc. You can stream the gorgeous “To Myself” and check out Merritt’s summer tour dates below.
