Song Premiere: Eric Burdon and The Greenhornes - “Out of My Mind”

In what may go down as a truly legendary collaboration, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Eric Burdon has joined with producer Brendan Benson and Cincinnati rockers The Greenhornes for a four-song EP. Paste spoke with Benson about the collaboration and has an exclusive premiere of one of the tracks off of the EP, “Out of My Mind.”

Benson, who produced the EP, was inspired by his work with Burdon at South By Southwest.

“It just came together. I mentioned to him, ‘Man, if you ever come to Nashville, I would love to get you into the studio with this band that i know,’” Benson said. “And to my amazement, he was like, ‘Okay. I’ll be there. Next week.’”

Burdon, known most notably as the front man of the Animals and praised by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Voices of All Time,” loved the idea.

“In these Greenhornes sessions, he really came to life,” noted Benson. “He was Eric Burdon again.”

For Benson and the Greenhornes alike, getting the chance to work with Burdon was a true privilege.

“Just being near him was enough, let alone making music with him.” said Benson. “Hearing his voice through the speakers- it’s just such an honor and a thrill.”
