“Drums in the living room, singer in the bedroom, four-track cassette recorder, cases of beer, whiskey, sandwiches and a sunny porch.”
That’s how Birger Olsen describes his band Denver’s self-titled LP, which Portland’s Mama Bird Recording Co. released in August. Like their label, Denver has strong ties to Portland, featuring members of Blitzen Trapper and the band of singer-songwriter Alela Diane. Their album is a prime example of the Northwest’s flourishing country western movement, featuring plenty of twangy, desolate slide guitar and tight vocal harmonies.
One of Denver’s standout tracks is “The Way It Is,” the video for which we’re proud to premiere for you below. Directed by Patrick Stanton (Blitzen Trapper, Modest Mouse, Portlandia), it’s a clear homage to Roadhouse, including a bar fight and a screen of chicken wire to protect the band.
