As we all gear up for the fall premieres of our favorite television shows, viewers are soaking up every bit of content they can. GIFs and think-pieces on our favorite characters abound, trailers are watched and rewatched and soundtracks are released. For HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, the soundtrack is as artful as the show itself. With contributions from favorites like The National’s Matt Berninger, the show is set to release Volume Two of the soundtrack on Sept. 3 via ABKCO Records.
Now, listen to the latest single from the soundtrack, Loudon Wainwright’s “The Prisoner’s Song.” The track was recorded with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, the New York based jazz group that acts as Boardwalk Empire’s house band.
”’The Prisoner’s Song’ is deceptively simple.,” said Wainwright. “It has a melody that verges on sing-song, but a narrative that is compelling, with a terrible and tragic pay off: the singer/narrator will undoubtedly rot and die in jail. Working with producers Randy Poster and Stewart Lerman and arranger and band leader Vince Giordano was once again a great pleasure.”
