Video Premiere: Sarah Jarosz, Brian Wright - Live from the Americana Music Convention
Every year, the Americana Music Association descends upon Nashville, Tenn. for a music festival to celebrate the accomplishment and further the creative spirit of the genre. Vanguard Records and Sugar Hill Records had several of their artists sit for a series of intimate performances at Minutia Studios while they were in town for the event. Song Premiere: Bill Carter - "That's What I'm Doin' Here"
Austin-based singer-songwriter Bill Carter is somewhat of a mainstay in the music industry after writing for several other artists. Now, though, the time has finally come for Carter to release a full-length album of his own. His first solo release, Unknown, is set for release on Jan. 15. Although one track, “Anything Made of Paper,” has already garnered critical acclaim for its inclusion in the upcoming Peter Jackson documentary about the Memphis 3, there is plenty left to hear from this release. Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith began honing his skills in the music industry at 14, forming a band and taking cues from legends like Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello. Since 1995 and the release of his iconic Everything I Long For, Toronto singer-songwriter Hayden Desser, known as simply “Hayden” has played most of the instruments on his albums, has almost always mixed and engineered them and even self-released albums on his own Hardwood Records label. Since his beginnings in Toronto’s alternative music scene, he’s been known as a natural and introspective storyteller, and his upcoming album is no exception. Live @ CMT: Grace Potter - "Stars"
Grace Potter had a whirlwind of a year in 2012. Known for her high-energy performances with the Nocturnals, their non-stop touring schedule and acclaimed release The Lion The Beast The Beat has catapulted Potter and the Nocs into genre-crossing fame. When the tour stopped in Nashville, Tenn. for a two-night run of sold-out shows at the Ryman Auditorium, Potter took time out to stop in the CMT studios for an unplugged performance. Live from Newport Folk: Apache Relay
For the second year in a row, Paste joined forces with Sennheiser at the legendary Newport Folk Festival to record unique performances with some of our favorite artists. To top off the intimate atmosphere and high-quality sound, we stepped it up in 2012 by giving fans wireless headphones to enjoy these sessions as they were happening. Nashville band Apache Relay made an appearance at the Paste Ruins for a performance of “American Nomad,” the title track for their 2011 full-length album. Song Premiere: Big Harp - "Waiting for Some Drunk"
Big Harp is the musical partnership of real-life married couple Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drooten-Senseney. Although the two met in 2007, they played in various other musical projects until they formed Big Harp in 2010. Live from Paste: Rubblebucket
Rubblebucket, whose latest EP Oversaturated was one of our best EPs of the year, recently dropped by the Paste office for a live set of their characteristically dancey tracks. The performance features the seven members playing seemingly-divergent parts that end up layering together effortlessly, giving this Brooklyn-based troupe a unique sound that sets them apart. The band isn’t finished playing shows for 2012 yet. You can still catch them on their New Years Eve run. Joshua Hanson, Californian by way of Idaho, originally began performing under the name Yellow Red Sparks as a solo artist. After self releasing one EP via iTunes, he took on new members and is now set to release their debut self-titled full length on January 29 via Org Music. The band has already given fans an idea of what to expect on the album by releasing their first single, “Monsters with Misdemeanors,” but they’ve now released another song from the album. Video Premiere: Hello Echo - "Why Are We Waiting?"
After releasing their debut LP Hello in 2011, Los Angeles trio Hello Echo have spent the fall touring in support of their follow-up EP Coffee Cups. The band’s latest video reveals some creativity outside of music, too. Guitarist and vocalist Sean Aylward created this charming stop-motion video in the band’s practice space with his own tools and props. Musician and acclaimed songwriter Ron Sexsmith is set to release Forever Endeavour, his latest full-length, on Feb. 5 via Cooking Vinyl. The album will feature 12 original tracks and was produced by Mitchell Froom. This will be his first release since last year’s Long Player, Late Bloomer. The first track from the album, “Nowhere to Go,” takes a lighthearted approach to the down-and-out feeling of being stuck in a rut.
