Video Premiere: Royal Forest - "Everyone Who Knows You"
Royal Forest has officially taken the idea of live field recordings to new heights—or should we say depths? The Austin-based band boarded the USS Cavalla Submarine to record their song “Everyone Who Knows You,” and although the WWII-era submarine wasn’t submerged, the result is still something special. The band recorded the song and captured the process on camera in just three hours with two microphones. The video documents the process involved and the flexibility and innovation it takes to work in such a unique space. “Capturing the sounds of this weird, boxy, metallic space was our main interest—-for example, we... read more
Song Premiere: Bonzie feat. The Milk Carton Kids - "Felix"
Bonzie is 17-year-old Nina Ferraro, a Chicago-based singer-songwriter who is tapping into her youthful honesty to produce uniquely heartfelt tracks. Her debut full length, Rift Into The Secret Of Things, is a shift in sound for the artist, who has evolved from the pop-centric sound of her early teens. Now, Bonzie has released a new track from Rift Into The Secret Of Things, a song titled “Felix” on which she collaborates with The Milk Carton Kids’ Joey Ryan. “I wanted ‘Felix’ to have a male harmony part, and I had a very specific kind of voice in mind,” said Ferraro.... read more
Album Stream: Sleeping At Last - Atlas: Light
Sleeping At Last’s Ryan O’Neal has had big plans for 2013. The singer and multi-instrumentalist is one-third of the way through a project entitled Atlas that will include the release of six EPs throughout the year. Light, the second EP of the project, is a follow up to January’s Darkness EP. “This collection of songs explores as many interpretations of “light” as I could imagine: weightlessness, exposure, heaven, hope, new life, fireworks and even stories projected onto movie theater screens,” says O’Neal. Light is certainly a visual album. The floating keys and accompanying strings section complement O’Neal’s vocals. It’s no... read more

Song Premiere: The Wild Feathers - "Hard Wind"
The Wild Feathers originated in Austin, Texas when members Ricky Young, Joel King, Taylor Burns, Preston Wimberly and Ben Dumas bonded over their shared devotion to legends like Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, leaving their solo careers behind to form a new sound that paid tribute to the old. Their genre-blending sound explains a lot about their seemingly out-there tour schedule, as they’ve opened up for the likes of Bob Dylan as well as country’s Kip Moore. Now, just in time to amp up the anticipation for their forthcoming self-titled album, the quintet has announced a tour with Willie Nelson... read more

Get your feet ready for some stomping: Larry and His Flask have been parading their unique blend of bluegrass, rock, and punk around the US, Canada and Europe for the past year and are now set to release their latest full length album, By the Lamplight. By the Lamplight showcases the band’s raucous pace, but it never distracts from the layered harmonies and runs on mandolin, banjo, and guitar. The boys from Oregon have a steady stream of tour dates throughout the US and Canada well into the fall promoting the new album. By the Lamplight is set for release... read more

Album Stream: We Barbarians - Mexico, NY
This week, Brooklyn-based power trio We Barbarians release their latest EP, Mexico, NY. The album’s significance, however, goes far beyond it being their lastest collection of songs to be pressed to vinyl. On October 29 of last year, the band’s Greenpoint storage space was ravaged by Hurricane Sandy. It was a space they shared with the bands Delta Spirit and Cults, but while those two bands were out on tour, We Barbarians were in New York, as was what frontman David Quon estimates was $45,000 worth of instruments and equipment they had accumulated over 10 years. Almost all of it... read more
Video Premiere: The New Regime - "Daydream"
Ilan Rubin has already accumulated a solid fanbase from his time with Nine Inch Nails, and his solo project The New Regime expands upon the intense sound we’ve come to expect from the percussionist while adding in additional instrumentals, all performed by Rubin himself. Rubin has already released two albums as The New Regime, but as he accumulated material for his third, it became clear that the ideas might be fit for a different kind of release. “When it came time for a third release, I had enough material for almost two full-lengths,” said Rubin in a recent press release.... read more
Video Premiere: Emily Wolfe - "Lion Heart"
Emily Wolfe made a name for herself around the Austin music scene with her debut folk rock album, Director’s Notes. But as she began the writing process for her second full length, she says she felt pulled in two different directions stylistically. Wolfe made the decision to instead record two strikingly different, yet completely honest, EPs. The first of these EPs, Mechanical Hands, was released in May of this year. In the wake of the success of Mechanical Hands, Wolfe has released a video for “Lion Heart.” The video, directed by Jacob Hamilton, is a beautiful representation of the themes... read more

Video Premiere: Grandchildren - "End Times"
Grandchildren began as a solo project for Philadelphia musician Aleks Martray, who layered his acoustic guitar with a loop pedal. Since its inception in 2008 the band has evolved to a six piece, releasing their latest album Golden Age just last week. Golden Age was produced by Chris Powell (Man Man) and Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog), and the album draws on Martray’s many moves as a child of the military. ""I think when you live and travel all over the world from such a young age your mind constructs a sort of map that is an amalgamation of all of... read more
Sennheiser/Paste Present: Sound Bytes from SXSW Interactive - LeVar Burton
This year during South By Southwest Interactive, Paste and Sennheiser teamed up to present an array of interviews each day, live from the Blackheart on Rainey Street. From actors to game developers to musicians and more, each interview was an engaging encounter that highlighted just how much creative energy was present in Austin that week. Sennheiser stepped up the experience with their wireless headphones, allowing those in attendance to listen in on the interviews even as they milled around on the patio in the Texas sunshine. LeVar Burton was kind enough to stop in on our event at The Blackheart,... read more

Video Premiere: The Mowgli's - "The Great Divide"
The music video for “The Great Divide” by The Mowgli’s will grab your attention. The video featured the band’s eight members hanging out, and takes on the feel of an old home movie. The music video’s theme makes sense; Friendship has driven the California-based band, and they are set to release their debut album Waiting for the Dawn on June 18. The band works together, and doesn’t release music until everyone has contributed. This includes drawing from all of the members’ influences, which range from metal to doo-wop to pop. Check out the video for “The Great Divide” below.... read more
Song Premiere: Swear and Shake - "Brother"
It’s already been a wildly successful year for Brooklyn’s Swear and Shake. In February, they set sail aboard Rock Boat XIII with the likes of Sister Hazel and Brandi Carlile, and more recently the band played to a rain-soaked crowed at the inaugural Shaky Knees Festival. However, the year began with the announcement that the band’s drummer Thomas Elefante would be leaving Swear and Shake. “Brother” is the last song the band tracked with Elefante. “I couldn’t ask for a more fitting way to represent all of the remarkable musical ideas he’s brought to my music over the twelve years... read more
