She has a Maltese terrier named Diamond. Her favorite rapper is Nicki Minaj. She’s from Tampa. She’s 18 (no, 19) depending on which blog you check. She’s rumored to have been rapping locally since she was 12. And music journalist Jessica Hopper wrote on her blog last summer: “She makes Santigold sound like the teacher from Peanuts.”

This is pretty much all we know about Dominique Young Unique, the spunky rapper from Florida who’s been name-dropped all over the web lately. But with lyrics quick and sharp as little static shocks, hand claps layered over perfectly syncopated beats and what sound like frantically sped-up Grizzly Bear samples for hooks, we can definitely venture to say we like her. A lot.
