Is it just us, or has ’90s nostalgia taken this summer by storm? With VH1 announcing the return of Pop-Up Video, Nirvana and U2 re-releasing hit 1991 albums and Pearl Jam celebrating their 20th anniversary, it seems that the decade is fighting for a revival.
And what better way to be revived than by a viral meme that makes Gen Y-ers double over with laughter?
For those familiar with the Nickelodeon cartoon The Wild Thornberrys, which first premiered in 1998, you’ll remember Nigel Thornberry (voiced by Tim Curry), the sometimes-incomprehensible wildlife documentarian father of Eliza.
It’s time to face the fact that Millenials have taken over the internet. Nigel’s incoherent mutters and warbles have been remixed into popular songs, such as Adele’s “Rolling In the Deep” and Katy Perry’s “Firework.” Nigel even teamed up with another ’90s phenomenon on “Bye Bye Blargh.”
But our favorite just might be Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.” We can’t even describe why we find it so funny, it just is. And we’d like to shake the hand of whoever started the Nigel Thornberry Meme.
