The History of "That's What She Said"

A Michael Scott staple, “That’s what she said” is a joke that might be overused, but for good reason. There are way too many opportunities to say it, some more appropriate than others. But whether you bite your tongue or go ahead and follow up a clearly unintentionally provocative remark, the joke will likely be in our minds for a long time to come.

Little did we know, though, the phrase has a long and socially poignant history. This video documents the origin of “That’s what she said,” way back to the days of first lady and activist Eleanor Roosevelt. Maybe now people will appreciate the (not yet factually verified) story and meaning behind what has become what some might call a cheap and immature “joke.”
