The Real-Life Version of the Batcycle

It might not exactly be as sleek as the Batcycle that Batman rockets around Gotham on in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, but the “spherical drive system” motorcycle that a group of students from San Jose State University are developing functions in much the same way.

The Batcycle’s strength is its maneuverability, allowing Batman to stop abruptly and make sharp, 90 degree turns into alleyways or wherever else he needs to dart to evade Gotham’s finest. The spherical wheels of the bike San Jose State is developing would allow for similar movement (the wide, but more traditional wheels of the Batcycle accomplished this by tumbling); in fact, they allow for “360 degree freedom for rotation in any direction.”

The bike is made entirely out of carbon fiber and rubber, runs on three electric motors and would be ideal for all weather. Unfortunately we don’t think it will be bulletproof.
