14 Acoustic Guitars Played Simultaneously by a Computer

For a sound installation titled “Playa,” Ruben Dhers has rigged wires to dangle over 14 supine acoustic guitars in an effort to create a sound that mimics the natural patterns of the ocean. The guitars are “played” by fabric-tipped motors on the ends of the hanging wires, which are controlled by a computer system designed by Dhers.

The resulting sound is a lulling atmospheric whir of acoustics that, when you think about it, does kind of sound like what one might imagine the pattern of the ocean’s breaks to sound like.
