In recent weeks we have seen movie theaters demonstrate both negative and positive reinforcement for moviegoers who choose to use their phones during the screening of a film. But it’s not a stretch of the imagination to envision filmmakers embracing viewers who cannot keep their hands off of their phones by making it an integral part of their films. This is exactly what the producers of a Dutch thriller called APP have done.
According to Thompson on Hollywood, the film’s main character will receive “codes and cryptic texts,” which will also be sent to moviegoers sitting in the audience.
The first in what may be a new narrative technique, APP is set to open in the Netherlands this February. Whether other filmmakers follow suit remains to be seen.
