Amazon's Jeff Bezos Obtains Patent for Smart Phone Airbag System

It’s impossible to own a smart phone without fumbling it out of your grasp and onto hard, unforgiving pavement at least a few times. That horrifying, heart-stopping moment when you realize your phone is on an unstoppable collisions course might, however, get a little less stressful, that is if Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos sees his recently obtained patent for smart phone air bags through to fruition.

The air bag system would rely on your phone’s accelerometer, the internal synchronization mechanism used by apps that require the phone’s movement. As soon as your phone is in free fall, miniature air bags would deploy that would then cushion the phone’s impact, potentially saving you hundreds of dollars and the hassle of dealing with obtaining a replacement.

The idea is fairly half-baked, but with an Amazon/Kindle phone reportedly on the horizon, anything is possible. Check out a rough sketch of the airbag system to the right. (via Engadget)
