There's a Petition to Name The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle a U.S. Poet Laureate

For years, John Darnielle has created poetic songs as Mountain Goats, which was on display most recently with this year’s Transcendental Youth. Now a new petition has been started that would help name Darnielle a U.S. Poet Laureate.

The petition currently only has only 174 signatures and needs over 24,000 signatures by January 25, 2013.

The current United States Poet Laureate is Natasha Trethewey, who was appointed in June 2012 and began her duties in September. Whomever receives the position is awarded a $35,000 stipend and is responsible for overseeing poetry readings, lectures and promoting poetry.

So if you’d like to see Darnielle become a government-appointed poet, do your part and sign the petition.
