There are plenty of good reasons to engage in charity, and a couple bad ones, but none as satisfying as giving out of unmitigated spite. That’s what stand-up comic Doug Stanhope proved earlier this year when he raised $125,760 for Moore, Okla. tornado victim Rebecca Vitsum purely to annoy people. As Stanhope explained this week on Charlie Brooker’s annual Newswipe program, he started the campaign “simply to be a prick to her Okie Christian neighbors” who thanked God instead of charity donors like him.
To motivate backers of the Indiegogo fundraiser named “”Atheists Unite, Stanhope offered satirical rewards like a “Get Out of Hell Free card” and “First Choice for Reincarnation,” costing $50 and $2,500, respectively. Apparently the prospect of coming back as an eagle was worth it to atheists, as donors more than doubled the campaign’s initial goal of $50,000 during its two-month run. Check out the segment below and get a vicarious dose of that warm, fuzzy, vindictive feeling.
