A long time ago in various filming locations (some far, far away), English actor Peter Mayhew took his camera along with him to document the production of a new film he had just been cast in: Star Wars.
What resulted was a collection of some 1,200 behind-the-scenes photos spanning the creation of the first three Star Wars films. The images didn’t see the light of day until last weekend, when the actor popularly known as Chewbacca tweeted a few selections from his archive.
While a disproportionate amount of Mayhew’s photos focus on fellow cast member Carrie Fisher (as many a heterosexual young man is wont to do), the collection as a whole provides multiple heartwarmingly candid moments such as Sir Alec Guinness’ birthday celebration in Tunisia and a frigid lunch in Norway (where the Battle of Hoth was filmed). Others, like a photo of C3PO relaxing beneath a beach umbrella or Princess Leia playing with her iconic hair buns, purely demonstrate the cast and crew’s goofier side.
