Nike designer Tinker Hatfield excited sneaker-heads around the world last week at the Jordan Brand’s Flight Lab in New Orleans with one declaration:
“Are we going to see Power Laces in 2015? To that I say YES!”
Power Laces were the ultimate feature of the then-fictional 2015 Nike MAG sneakers sported by Marty McFly in Back to the Future II. In 2011, Nike released a limited-edition replica of the MAG sneakers and 1,500 pairs were auctioned off on eBay, with proceeds benefitting the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. The shoes were a hit, raising close to $6 million for the charity, but there was one thing missing from the prototype: The film version of the MAG featured self-tying laces.
Since Back to the Future was (partially) set in 2015, it would make sense for Power Laces to be sold alongside Nike MAG replicas, but that information is so far unconfirmed. Fortunately, sneaker aficionados won’t have to wait too much longer for a piece of 80s Hollywood nostalgia.
