Rift (1993)
An intriguing concept album about a breakup, a dream and a parallel dimension, Rift is Phish’s strongest early-period album.

Newbies: “Fast Enough For You,” “Silent in the Morning,” "My Friend, My Friend"
Heads: “Maze,” “Sparkle,” “The Wedge”

A Picture of Nectar (1992)
Phish’s first record for major label Elektra (with whom the band would remain for the rest of its two-decade career). Like Lawn Boy, it's all over the map stylistically, though the songs don't stretch out quite so much.

Newbies: “Chalkdust Torture,” “Poor Heart”
Heads: “Stash,” “Llama”

(Also: check out this excellent 1994 live version of "Chalkdust Torture" live on David Letterman.)
