The Devil's Backbone
(2001)

Director Guillermo del Toro visits the horrors of war in this ghost story set in the time of the Spanish Civil War. Del Toro's gift for creating engulfing worlds of fiction that are eerie mirrors to our own truly shines in this tale of lost innocence and shocking violence.

The Host
(2006)
This South Korean update on the Godzilla mythos broke box office records in its homeland before gaining international acclaim with its pollution-bred monstrosity that harbors a dangerous virus. Director Bong Joon-Ho employes disarming humor and stark drama to make this one one of the most entertaining action horror movies in recent memory.

Let the Right One In
(2008)
This narrative about a young boy who befriends a female vampire made us frigid just looking at its bleak, sterile shots of frozen Sweden and its deathly-pale cast. When the blood starts spraying everywhere, you don't know whether to recoil in horror or appreciate the masterful camera composition and vivid colors of this visual tour de force. And it gets major kudos for being the first horror movie named after a Morrissey song.

Shaun of the Dead (2004)
The first part of director Edgar Wright's Cornetto trilogy stars comedic odd couple Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as two bumbling losers caught in the midst of a zombie outbreak in London. While it's mostly a chucklefest, there are a few truly frightening moments and Shaun serves as an immaculate example of flesh-eating fun.
