PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo 2008, Day 3: Belgianwaffle isn't what you think
Thus far, I haven't been very clear about the criteria by which I'm selecting these blogs to blog about. That's because no real criteria exists. The first two days of PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo involved a lot of clicking around and browsing and brow-furrowing and yawning until I landed upon something suitable. Today, though, I deliberately scanned the "B"-list for blogs titles that seemed most indicative of potential awesomeness. ... read more
PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo, Day 2: A Little Radish plans ahead
Two days in to NaBloPoMo, November's bloggers seem to be almost universally fixated on one of two subjects: Halloween and NaBloPoMo itself. Most blogs I've checked out so far agree that Friday night was really fun but OMG how are they going to make it through a month of posting every day and why did they decide to do this again or at all in the first place? Which leads me to wonder, what is it about this completely voluntary exercise that incites such whining? Is this just customary throat clearing before everyone gets down to brass tacks? Was I... read more
PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo 2008, Day 1: Get your whine on with 1st World Problems

PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo 2008: It begins! (Tomorrow!)
Along with National Novel Writing Month, tomorrow's also the first day of yet another installment of National Blog Posting Month, NaNoWriMo's lower-impact, higher-tech cousin. While NaNoWriMo happens only once every November, any month can be NaBloPoMo: Just pick one, sign up, register your blog, and then post to it every single day that month. Sounds easy enough, right? I'm not so sure, but I'm about to find out for myself. ... read more
The 13 Best Scary Movies of the Past 13 Years
[Above: Lina Leandersson as Eli in Let the Right One In]There's no better time than Halloween to get closer to a loved one as promiscuous teenagers get slaughtered by a masked boogeymen or the netherworld wreaks psychological mayhem on our favorite actors and actresses. And while Hitchcock, Price, Carpenter, Craven and Cronenberg are undeniable masters of projecting our collective fears on the wide screen, it's time to honor some modern masters of celluloid terror. Here are our picks for the 13 best scary movies of the past 13 years. What are yours?... read more
Current Events: Ghouls, Ghouls, Ghouls - A Halloween Playlist
Above: Screamin' Jay HawkinsFrom Robert Johnson allegedly selling his soul to the Devil at some midnight Mississippi crossroads to the schlocky Ed Wood-inspired horror-punk of the Misfits and the spooky graveyard romps of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, there’s a dark side of rock ’n’ roll, a creepiness that balances the most saccharine love ballads. It’s very yin and yang; for every “I want to Hold Your Hand” there’s a “Paint It Black,” for every “Killing me Softly” there’s a “Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight?” And what better time to celebrate this dark side than on... read more
Dan Aykroyd wants you to drink Crystal Head Vodka
[Above: Aykrod ponders his next career move]Celebrities hawk products. This is just how the ad world works, according to Mad Men (which we trust implicitly, of course). Sometimes the ones shilling make sense (see: Tiger Woods for Nike) and sometimes we're simply amazed that Pharrell is a PC—or that 50 Cent-sponsored condoms ever existed.... read more

TV Detail: Pushing Daisies review. Episode 2.04—"Frescorts"
"Frescorts" pulled off a miraculous feat: it kept the momentum from "Bad Habits," one of the best episodes in the entire Pushing Daisies series. There's a melancholic undercurrent running through each episode: every character is lonely, desperately searching for a way to fill the empty spaces in their hearts. Some are more successful at it than others.... read more
TV Detail: The Starter Wife review. Episode 103—"Remains of the Snow Day"
In "Remains of the Snow Day," we experience Molly's most pointed movie-montage daydream. She's faking drug addiction at a ritzy rehab center when an every-Disney-movie fantasy produces her profusely apologetic ex-husband, the dubious-but-dreamy writing group instructor in a gold cape (above), and her garland-crowned seven-year-old, proclaiming "Kids are resilient! Divorce builds character." ... read more
Finally: the first single from Guns N' Roses' comically overdue Chinese Democracy. But is there still a place in rock for Axl Rose?
In the fourth grade, when I first became curious about rebellion and rock ’n’ roll, Guns N’ Roses seemed like the perfect fit. A friend of mine had a poster featuring the longhaired, tattooed rockers strewn drunken and shirtless behind police crime-scene tape, clad in leather pants and leather jackets, clutching bottles of Black Death vodka and looking like they did not give a shit about anything. Damn, I thought, these guys are pretty cool! ... read more
The 30 Best Moments from 30 Rock So Far
Tina Fey is so hot right now. Her impersonation of Sarah Palin has lured millions of viewers back to Saturday Night Live. NBC, bless them, have been doing all they can to use her performance as the hockey mom from Alaska to entice people to watch 30 Rock. The fact the Emmy-winning comedy has never had huge ratings is a shame, because it is, pound-for-pound, one of the smartest and funniest shows on television. In honor of the premiere of season three on Oct. 30 (right after The Office), we decided to fondly look back at 30 of its most... read more
TV Detail: Dexter review. Episode 3.04—"All in the Family"
So, uh, Dexter and Rita are engaged. Weird. The entire episode this week—as Dexter tried to convince her to accept his awkward, whim-induced proposals—felt out of line with the subtle shades that have developed their relationship over the last few seasons. She had a tentative place in the show early on, as if she could have easily left the cast, and it’s hard not to get the sense that she’s going to need to get a little more wind of Dexter’s nighttime activities for this to work. We’ll see.... read more
TV Detail: SNL's "Fartface" sketch too crappy even for the Internet
Last week's Saturday Night Live was in no small way surreal, what with Tina Fey's Sarah Palin (briefly) meeting The Real Sarah Palin, and an oh-my-god-how-pregnant-can-a-person-be Amy Poehler pretty much handing The Real Sarah Palin's beehive to her with that incredible, Bullwinkle-slaughtering Weekend Update rap. But what about that "Fartface" sketch? Do you remember this, or has your brain since stashed it away in that little Awful Things To Conveniently Forget About For The Sake Of Your Sanity And General Human Decency lobe?... read more

Still Around Five Years After: Remembering Elliott Smith
He was hush-voiced and demon-haunted, and when he died from mysterious stab wounds on Oct. 21, 2003, much of the music world merely sighed with presumption. Nick Drake, they said. Jim Morrison. Kurt Cobain. It seemed the same with Elliott Smith. Another somber songwriter gone too soon.... read more
TV Detail: Samantha Who? review. Episode 2.2—"Out of Africa"
In the second episode of the sophomore season, Sam is "celebrating" her one year anniversary of getting amnesia by spending a night out with the gals. Trouble is, she gets a little too wrapped up in the fun and wakes up in bed with Todd. "Whoops" is right, lady! ... read more
TV Detail: Ugly Betty Review. Episode 3.4—"Betty Suarez Land"
Season 3 of Ugly Betty has been slow to start, but the series has finally hit its stride. The show has decided to go back to its core cast and make Daniel and Wilhelmina’s struggle over Mode the core focus of the show. Thursday’s episode quickly disposed of all extraneous characters in a nice and neat manner, wrapping up all lingering storylines from Season 2. ... read more
