We are on the second week of our six-week tear here. Last night
found us in Detroit. I was chilling eating my dinner before the show, and what
was on TV but 8 Mile. I had to watch it because Eminem is from Detroit, and, in
all honestly, the freestyle is inspiration, plus the whole movie is dope.
8 Mile put me in a Detroit state of mind. There was a hell of a
lot of good music that came out and is coming out of Detroit. John Lee Hooker,
Stevie Wonder and Motown, right? Recently, other peeps like Em, Kid Rock and my
boy Jack White. Sick soulful music grows in Detroit.
I brought my own blues to Detroit and the crowd was nicey nice.
John Butler and I did our version of "Blackbird" as well, and it was oh so tasty.
Its funny, I've been playing "Blackbird" for 20 years or so, and my old guitar
teacher, Waco Smith, rest his soul, taught me his own version. Needless to say,
it was not the same chords or arrangement as on the White Album. Well, JB and I
have relearned it and added a bit of spice to it and it sounds mighty fine.
Anyways, after Detroit, we headed to Toronto. That's the whole
reason I was writing this ramble, because crossing the border freaking sucks!
Everytime they wake us up in the middle of the night, search the bus, drag us
inside customs and immigration with our PJ’s and passports. How degrading! I
mean we are just trying to go play some rock 'n' roll for the fine citizens of
Canada. Oh Canada! A little less red tape would be nice. And don't get me wrong;
it's the same shit going back the other way. Its all worth it, I guess, because
the vibe in Toronto was thick and its one of my favorite cities to play. Well,
that's rock 'n' roll and we gotta roll.
Peace, Love and Happiness.
