Scuzzy do wop punk of the moment Wavves' Nathan Williams laid out his SXSW plans while driving to a gig at Phoenix's Trunk Space on Monday. Between Wednesday and Saturday, he and touring drummer Ryan Ulsh will cram in nine shows at various showcases, according to his MySpace page (Williams says there will be 10). Wavves' infectious second album, Wavvves, just got its physical release via Fat Possum this week. Although the San Diego-based Williams comes from a family of musicians, he's never played so many shows in such a short span of time before. Can he keep his growls and "oohs" fresh, or is he just going to lower his expectations?
"I'm a little under the
weather," Williams says, following a sneeze. "I had a small break. Ryan and I slept a lot. We have vitamins
and stuff. We'll try and stay healthy...mildly healthy. We're probably
going to get really drunk. I think that's my
only expectation. In the end we're just going to have fun. I don't know
what
it's like. It could be a drag, but I'm pretty positive about it. For
now, we're
just going to handle what's on our plate and stay healthy and out of
the
hospital."
Has that been a problem? "No hospital visits yet."
