Real talk: I ended up seeing a lot of white guys playing loud guitars yesterday. But the most exciting band of that pastey, distorted ilk—which is saying something, since I also caught excellent sets from Titus Andronicus and new Sub Pop signees Male Bonding—was Bad Sports. The Denton, Texas trio plays melodic garage punk for fans of Jay Reatard and Exploding Hearts, and onstage, the songs pop even more than they do on their self-titled debut LP, which was released late last year.

The band’s bassist, who goes by the ridiculously awesome moniker TV’s Daniel, clearly loves him some Johnny Ramone. From his haircut to his wide-legged stance, he paid homage to the NYC legend while standing out as the clear star of the show. When not hulking over his microphone stand, he would alternately attack his bass and amp while jumping around like a sweaty fool. Take note, boring rock bands! Photos below via self-titled magazine’s Aaron Richter. But first, have a listen to Bad Sports’ “On Video.”
