Jonathan Richman - Because Her Beauty is Raw and Wild [Vapor]"Well, she don't need to put nothin' in her hair / it's raw and wild / just like her." I love this record because, much like its cover above or the heroine from its self-titled track also quoted above, it's rustic and somehow graceful in a careless way. The former leader of the Modern Lovers bangs out these ramshackle tunes (about Johannes Vermeer, sweaty lovers, suffering and other typical Richmanian themes) on an acoustic guitar with spare accompaniment, and the result is charming as all hell. Because Her Beauty is Raw and Wild ends with a Leonard Cohen cover followed by the touchingly reflective "As My Mother Lay Lying." It's Richman's best album in years.
Listen to "When We Refuse to Suffer" by Jonathan Richman:

The Thomas Function album is my favorite of the year. It's incredible. The Black & Whites are not far behind.
I saw Justin Townes Earl perform live this summer, he was awesome. I love the album too.
