No Impact Man
A few years ago, Colin Beavan and his family set off on a year-long experiment to have a zero-net environmental impact: They ditched the car, pledged to buy nothing new, ate as local as possible and removed themselves almost completely from the grid. That they attempted this-- and succeeded-- in the environmentally unfriendly concrete jungle of New York City is all the more impressive. Colin blogged all the way through the project and now, more than a year since he and his family returned to “normal” life (having adopted many of the experiment's rules as basic ways of life), No Impact Man has become a hub of information, discussion and debate. If the book carries on this deft mix of Colin's personal narrative and his tough-minded look at the environmental issues plaguing our modern life, expect it to make a huge impact of its own.

Orangette
Molly's warm, affable writing and love of equally comforting, simple home cooking makes this one of my favorite food blogs. Food is so vital to her life, not just as daily nutrition but as fiber that strings small moments and whole relationships together. Some of my favorite posts are about how she and her now-husband met and bonded over their love of food, and I expect her book to reflect this same sense of the inextricable tangling of living and eating.
