A Dozen Dead Roses: An anti-Valentine's Day mix for the jaded heartbroken

The Tallest Man on Earth - "Honey, Won’t You Let Me In"

I’ve always been among the first in the room to decry the “new Dylan” tag anytime someone brings it up. But, damn, it’s hard to deny that Swedish singer/songwriter Kristian Matsson is the closest thing we’ve seen yet. Time will tell if he’s got the longevity, but his first album, Shallow Grave, is a hell of a start.

She & Him - "Change Is Hard"

Zooey Deschanel gets all Tammy Wynette on this remorseful ballad. Deschanel's got one of the most gorgeous voices I’ve ever heard in recent years—she doesn’t knock you over with it, but she’s a master of subtlety and restraint, always serving the song; never over-emoting.

Whiskeytown - "Lo-Fi Tennessee Mountain Angel"

Second Ryan Adams tune on the list, but this sort of thing is his stock in trade. This might be the most hauntingly beautiful song I have ever heard. The way Adams’ voice blends with Caitlin Cary’s is not of this world. It’s like thin wisp of stardust tossed in the solar wind; like two apparitions singing together from another spiritual plane. Listening to it right now, the chills are sprinting up and down my skin. Like they do every time I hear it.
