As you may have read, a few Paste staff members were out sailing the
high seas on Cayamo this week. Sounds like they're having a
pretty great time, but while they're soaking up all the Caribbean sunshine,
fancy mixed drinks and excellent roots music, a few of us are holding down the fort back at Paste HQ in good old landlocked
Decatur, Ga. We weren't bitter about this arrangement (personally, I'm still recovering from last year's Mayercraft experience), but none of us stragglers had very high expectations for the excitement level of our
office-bound week. However, though there wasn't a buffet or a water slide or
Emmylou Harris or anything, it was actually kind of fun! Here are some
highlights.
1. Sunday: It snowed in Atlanta!
It was cold and messy, but far less traumatic than last year's weird and sudden late-winter weather event. Our cohorts may have been sipping mojitos on the Lido deck, but they missed the first and probably last winter wonderland Atlanta will see for a while—guess we'll be kind and not mention how it was the perfect snowball-making consistency.2. Monday: A massive renovation project commenced in the office space downstairs!
Over the weekend, a few giant dumpsters appeared in our parking lot, including this extremely badass one. (Side note: Judging by the dumpster's graffiti, surely it went here over the weekend.) Our brains have been ringing with the sound of drilling, hammering and other unspecified but extremely loud and grating gutting noises emanating from below us all week as a construction crew revamps the space for whatever will replace the medical training school that used to live down there. On the plus side, this means that we can have rock bands play plugged-in sets when they visit the Paste studio! (Previously we had to enforce a strict "acoustic-only before 5 PM" rule, because the people downstairs were, like, learning to save lives or something.)
3. Tuesday: Wild Light played in the Paste studio!
Editor-in-Chief Josh has been blasting their "California On My Mind" from his desk speakers at top volume pretty much all year, so it's a bit ironic that the band came to visit while he was out on the high seas. The rest of us made a pretty nice welcome committee, though, for this great new four-piece out of New Hampshire, whose stripped-down set included three acoustic guitars, one drummed-on guitar case and a bunch of beachy harmonies. Also on Tuesday, all the snow melted. Kind of sad, but at least the office's front steps are no longer the
Treacherous Tundra Of Skull-Splitting Doom. (See main image, above.) Annnd now today's
forecasted high is 74 degrees—BEST OF BOTH WORDS, SUCKAS.4. Wednesday: Web Editor Austin bought a new power cord!
His old one broke.
5. Thursday: Harlem Shakes played in the Paste studio!
The Brooklyn band was feeling a bit under the weather but nonetheless regaled us with a set of songs a few from their new album, plus a sing-along cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World." They were super fun and funny, and we're really excited about their Technicolor Health, out later this month.
6. All week: Dogs in the office!
PS: Welcome back, everybody! We missed you!

METAL ONLY.
What is the action figure on Austin's shelf? Is it Catwoman?
Speaking of metal, Sand Hag, the action figure on my shelf is none other than William Murderface, bassist of Adult Swim's fictional, cartoon metal band, Dethklok.
And thanks, Brad, for the kind words.
