Legendary designer Valentino, who has a fantastic film coming out this month, shared with Paste his steps to good style. Take it for what it’s worth—fantastic advice from one of the most sophisticated clothing designers in the world!

1. Keep it simple: "Try to keep one style and do not become a fashion victim."

2. Be careful with color: "Use a simple palette of colors. Do not mix them too much if you are not an amazing style setter."

3. Think ahead: "Buy things you can wear for a few seasons."

4. Be yourself: "Do not follow avant-garde magazines or fashion…nobody wears their clothes."

5. Dress to impress: "Please the man you have…he must be proud, not shameful of your dressing."
