To celebrate the half-way point of 2009, this week Paste staffers are counting down their favorite albums and songs of the year (so far). Check out all of our lists here, and share your own favorites in the comments.
I've always been an album guy, but this is shaping up to be a singles year for me. I've already had quite a few songs on repeat—particularly a somewhat profane power-pop anthem from Wild Light. So my Top 10 Songs has become a Top 20, partly because of the brilliant charity compilation Dark Was the Night. Bon Iver, who didn't release a proper album this year still managed to get two songs on my list. And The Low Anthem, who technically released its gorgeous third album in 2008, sneaked its way thanks to a re-release from Nonesuch. Also, I couldn't resist a plug for The Decemberists' cover of Pink Floyd, which was given away to our Save Paste donors. When it comes to filling an entire LP with great songs, though, Passion Pit is off to an early best-album lead.

Why is no one else totally loving the new Julie Doiron record. It is SO GOOD. Especially the songs "Spill Yer Lungs" and "Blue".
It *has* been a great year for music (so far). I wholeheartedly agree with your votes for Neko Case, The Decemberists and Animal Collective. I'm still waiting to hear the new Grizzly Bear, and Passion Pit has catapulted into one of my frequent listens.
Thanks for your thoughts and keep Paste awesome! I'll keep an eye out for the others you recommend.

I wonder where Wilco's new album will fit on these lists...hopefully high! I liked hearing it via stream, but I can't wait to actually get my hands on it.
Indeed, with new Wilco dropping in 8 days I suspect the list will require some revision. New Son Volt on July 7th as well...the last album was reasonably promising.
Hazards of Love is a great album. Sad that both Son Volt AND The Decemberists are playing my town on the same day...the day I'm leaving for vacation (and I can't delay it.)
Elvis Perkins FTW. I can't stop listening to this album.
Nice lists Josh. Appreciate all the Bon Iver!
A little surprised you haven't put Dirty Projectors on your list. At least I would think you would put "Stillness is the Move" as one of your singles

The new Wilco album might be their first to underwhelm me. I'm also not as in love with the Dirty Projectors album as much as everyone else is. Julie Doiron has been on my desk for a couple weeks—still need to check that out. I'm sure there's a ton I've missed, but there's a ton to get excited about.
I agree with most of your picks...my list is below

No Dirty Projectors? Okay, those Phish fans might be right Josh -- you're an idiot. (I'm kidding, of course.) By the way, please tell me this talk of Paste doing poorly financially is overstated? How is it that the best music magazine in the world isn't getting subscriptions? Yikes. I tell you this ... I love Paste for it's indie coverage (minus the Pitchfork/Daytrotter elitism and "look at us, we're the news" kinda writing.) I love the Ears We Trust. And I love that you guys have the balls to put out stuff like that 3,500 word essay on Sweet Child O'Mine. God, that was classic. Keep up the great work!
My playlist has gleaned a lot from Dark Was the Night. It's such a great compilation.
And I love The Rake's Song, as well. Sometimes I wonder if that fact should concern me, though. It has garnered mixed reactions from a few of my friends. Something about murder or dying children didn't appeal to them. Who can say?
St Vincent - Actor
if you like Feist and/or Bjork i don't see how you couldn't like this.
Josh, posted much the same to Nick's list -- glad to see we share the Bon Iver obsession. Love the fact that 2 tracks make the list, he is so far ahead of his contemps, plus seems humble and extremely bright. Think you might dig this, coming from Sonos mid-Sep, a cappella Bon Iver --

Nice catch with "Belated Promise Ring." Definitely in Beam's top 10.
Anyone who loves "Hazards of Love" should make a point of seeing it live.
The ONLY editor at Paste to admit how great Veckatimest is, jesus what are you guys drinking down there in the south, surely Neko Case gets tiresome sometimes, no?
I would have to shift a tiny bit and include the
Iron and Wine CD and the new Green Day.
great list Josh...what about M.Ward though? your thoughts?
Good to see some love for "Charlie Darwin." Such a beautiful song!
also ECHO's, I just got it, and its amazing.
I'm not through all the lists yet, but I hope to see Blitzen Trapper's Furr up there.
BON IVER FANS: check this out! It gave me goosebumps

I like the list Josh. I would have put in Tight Knit by Vetiver though. If you haven't heard these guys then listen to them. They are great. Also for singles French Navy by Camera Obscura and Dry Grass and Shadows by Alela Diane. I can't stop listening to these songs.I liked both of these albums as well. The new Felice Brothers album isn't too bad either. Not top ten material, but still worth an honorable mention. Obsessed with The Hazards of Love! Part one and the Rake's song are addicting.
