7. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

Stevens' label, Asthmatic Kitty, got in some hot water over using the image of Superman—which is the property of DC Comics—on the cover of Illinois, and on subsequent printings the tiny image was removed. But this cover has many interesting entry points beyond the superhero: the "Come on feel the Illinoise" phrase, which led to some confusion as to what the album's actual title was (officially it was just Illinois not Illinoise or Come on Feel the Illinoise); the classic, cigar-chomping depiction of Al Capone; the city skyline of the John Hancock building and the Sears Tower; and a goat that perhaps represents the infamous curse on perennial underdogs the Chicago Cubs.
