Yesterday, we relayed the news that Led Zeppelin’s immortal, eight-minute “Stairway To Heaven” has been named “Britain’s Favorite Rock Song.”
We considered making a list of 10 Zeppelin Songs Better Than “Stairway,” then went back and listened to Jimmy Page’s climactic solo, and stopped ourselves from doing something foolish and dishonest. There are no Zeppelin songs better than “Stairway.” Here are the nine that come closest.
1. When The Levee Breaks — The drum line, arguably John Bonham’s best, inspired the Beastie Boys (who borrowed it for “Rhymin’ and Stealin’”). And Spike Lee changed the title to past tense for his Hurricane Katrina documentary. It is a brutal song, punctuated by moaning harmonica and a neverending groove.
2. Heartbreaker — Rarely does a song just stop for a guitar solo. But this one does: It comes to a complete halt, and then bursts into a shower of notes.
3. Babe I’m Gonna Leave You — A haunting guitar figure opens the tune, and then come the hair-raising vocals.
4. Immigrant Song — You’ve heard the phrase “Hammer of the Gods” used to describe Zeppelin’s music? This 125-second anthem uses the line in a lyric, while the music justifies the expression.
5. Over The Hills And Far Away — Love the purity of the acoustic guitar, and the timeless psych-out of the fake ending, and the fact that (like “Stairway”) it starts softly and then commences to rock.
6. What Is And What Should Never Be — Page’s psychedelic lead guitar doesn’t really get us. But his crunchy riff at the end certainly does.
7. The Song Remains The Same — A classic Zeppelin shape-shifter, driven by an indelible guitar line and Bonham’s staccato drums.
8. Gallows Pole — In retrospect, we should’ve seen the banjo throwdown as a premonition for Robert Plant’s late-blooming Americana career.
9. Whole Lotta Love — Our favorite moment comes around the three-minute mark, when Page concludes an extended trippy breakdown with peals of electric guitar that make the song’s signature riff seem boring by comparison.

Good list. Personally, I'd ditch "Gallows Pole" and "Immigrant Song" (the recording quality sucks) and replace them with "Ramble On" (gotta love the Gollum reference) and "Achilles Last Stand." Also, I gotta mention "Rain Song", it's just so beautiful.
Love the list (props on "Levee," that's in my top 5), but ... where's "Dazed and Confused?" Too obvious?
I would definitely have Bring It On Home, Ramble On and Going to California on my list. And Stairway, actually. I mean, I know it's overplayed, overused and overreferenced, but seriously, it's a classic masterpiece. It goes through several different memorable sections and builds to one of the most euphoric outros in rock history.
Not including "Achilles Last Stand" is a sin! Also, I would remove "What Is and What Should Never Be" for the sexiest song of all time, "Since I've Been Loving You".
So, from Ukraine, i like Dyer Maker, Since I've Been Loving You and Kashmir. Thanks.
I would replace The Song Remains the Same with Dazed and Confused. Also add on Bron-Yr-Aur. It's the most beautiful acoustic solo of all time.
I feel like Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp is an underappreciated song; it's one of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Also, Kashmir, Since I've Been Lovin' You, and Going to California would have made it on my personal list as well.
i have huge love for whole lotta love but i definitely think that going to california and tangerine should be included here.
Carouselambra
In the evening
Trampled underfoot
Nobody's fault but mine
Hey hey what can I do
I'm only going to mention one song because otherwise I'd just go on and on..."In My Time of Dying" is one song I CAN NEVER PLAY LOUD ENOUGH!! From the slow boil at the beginning to the relentless pummeling of Bonham's drums and Jimmy's slide guitar for the rest of it! Totally epic...makes my heart start to race thinkin' about it!!
Levee is my favorite Zeppelin song . . . it's kinda perfect, so nice call there. Nothing from Physical on here?? In My Time of Dying or Ten Years Gone would be in my top 10. I agree with johncarswell, Ramble On and Achilles . . . both great. Also, agree with kevin re: Bring it On Home. Possibly my favorite Page riff (once it kicks in).
Kevin, Stairway is on the list -- re-read the intro.
I'm glad to see some love going out to "In My Time of Dying." I think that one has a slight edge over "Levee" as Bonham's best performance on a studio album. "Achilles Last Stand" is too epic to ignore--Page's layering of the multiple guitar parts, Bonham's driving beat, Jones' galloping bass, and Plant's various chants, grunts, and wails. My appreciation of the crisp rhythm and musical sophistication of "Fool in the Rain" has grown over the years. And does anyone else get caught up in the wistfulness of "I'm Gonna Crawl"?
My all time fave is and will always be "Hey Hey (What Can I Do?)", which was the b-side for the "Immigrant Song" single.
I know they are not their greatest ones but I have always liked quite a lot:
Misty Mountain Hop
Since I've Been Loving You
The Wanton Song
The Song Remains The Same
No Quarter
Dancing Days
That's The Way
Ten Years Gone
Going to California is simply classic and it's a shame you left it off. And I have to agree with a couple others, ditch Gallows Pole, move Over the Hills and Far Away up and also add in Achilles Last Stand.
I think everyone goes through their phases, but almost invariably, you gotta come back to 'Stairway.' You can't deny it's power, it's beautiful structure, growing in intensity with each verse until the solo, it's orgasmic release and breathily quiet epilogue; it's epic and amazing.
While I love most of the songs cited in this list, I gotta come up with my own.
1. Ten Years Gone
2. The Battle of Evermore
3. Since I've Been Loving You
4. Friends/Celebration Day (Mostly for 'Friends.' The song is a mantra I cannot shake, but like 'Heartbreaker/Livin' Lovin' Maid,' I can't sever the two)
5. Trampled Under Foot
6. Going to California
7. That's the Way
8. Ramble On (RP makes the use of the word 'twas' sound cool. How is that possible?
9. How Many More Times
10. Kashmir
HM The Rain Song, Down by the Seaside, Bron-Yr-Aur
Hell, I love 'em all.
EGG... I'm Gonna Crawl is the best track on ITTOD. I appreciate the pop perfection of Fool in the Rain and All My Love, but am so tired of hearing them on the radio. (Yes, I listen to radio.)
You guys should have included Dazed and Confused and Since I've Been Loving You and ditched What Is And What Should Never Be and Gallows Pole.Whole Lotta Love should also be placed higher, the psychedelic blues licks are possibly the best ever recorded. All in all,not a bad list.
where is since i've been loving you
I understand that there is really no right or wrong in picking a top 10 song list on a band such as Led Zeppelin (with as many distinguished rock jewels as they cranked out), but man..."Since I've Been Lovin You" feels so wrong to be left out. Excluding the other 9 spots, which you all respectfully filled, "Since I've Been Lovin You" is as soulful, bluesy, and heartbreaking as any song Robert Plant ever lent his voice to. The band hits all the right notes, but when he lets out "I"m about to lose my worried mind", I almost feel awkward and worried in my car seat at how genuine the exhausted delivery comes off. Good list, but that is my number one.
Good list. These lists are always personal.
For me, I'd add 'Since I've Been Loving You.' It has one of the top vocal performances and one of the best guitar performances of the whole Zep catalog. Listen to it again and be amazed.
'Friends,' from Zep III, is also in my top 10, but rarely appears on anyone else's list.
Yeah, the sound quality on Zep III is pretty bad, but the performances are some of the best, at least until the album sort of dissolves into sonic nonsense at the end.
Being of the age, social demographic, and peer group that worshiped Led Zeppelin and saw them in concert several times back in the day, I can say as almost always, age and perspective changes everything - and with music tastes this is usually true as well. Now in my late fifties, I've long moved on to Jazz and classical, and what blues I do listen to is the blues I should have stuck with all along - the better black blues musicians (Muddy, Howlin'Wolf, T-Bone Walker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, J.L.Burnside, etc.), and not been led astray by melanin-challenged imitators relying on studio sound doctors like Peter Grant and not camouflaging their sloppy musicianship behind loud dB amplification and the rock writers, and marketing manipulators to dish mediocrity. Regardless, Zep was one of the top, white heavy metal bands going. Oh yeah, my top Led Zeppelin song(s) these days? Only two I bother with: Black Mountain Side and Bron Yr Aur. Disagree? I understand. In some ways some people never move far past their adolescence.
Good list, but some I would have included? Since I Been Loving You. Ten Years Gone. Tea for One. That's the Way. Bron-y-aur (not the stomp. . .) No Quarter. And on and on and on. Depends on the day and the mood, really.
Hellooooooo?
Where is Kashmir? it has everything, from mysticism to strings to heaviness to thrusting pelvic from-the-crotch sensuality and some of the greatest work Plant and Jones every did. It is one of the most complete songs in rock history. Dudes!
THen i would add, from my personal fave list (and more debatable on the broader level, unlike Kashmir) Bron-Yr-Aur, The ROver, Ten Years Gone, The Rain Song, In the Light.
The Rain Song is missing, as well as Bron-yr-Aur, and Travelling Riverside Blues.
