Terrifying Macy's Day Balloons From Thanksgivings Past

Published at 8:30 AM on November 25, 2010

We’ve got it pretty good these days. Most people who celebrate Thanksgiving do so by getting together with friends and loved ones, eating tremendous amounts of food, watching sports, laying about the house, listening to music and so on. Oh, but reader! Did you know that Thanksgiving used to be completely and utterly terrifying?!? Neither did we. That is, until we came across this 2008 DesignRelated.com blog post, in which clearly-fearless journalist Karen Horton gets right to the heart of the Macy’s Day parade’s nightmare-inducing past. It’s worth a look. Below, we’ve corralled a few of the scariest images into a gallery. As you peruse them, remember to be thankful for our only moderately frightening present day.
