Allow me to level with you, reader. I’ve always had a hard time deeming an album cover “the best” of a year, decade, or otherwise. I don’t know what it is, exactly. Album covers are just works of art, and I know when I like a work of art. I guess it’s just that the main reason I ever look at an album cover in the first place is usually because I’m curious about the music. Then again, I’ve also listened to albums for months without seeing their covers. It’s kind of a weird thing, and I find that my favorite album covers are weird ones or ones that have resonated with me simply because I love their music so much. They don’t have to be gorgeous, brilliant, funny or bizarre if the album means a lot to me and I’ve somehow gotten the art wrapped up in that over time.
I’ll tell you one thing, though: I sure do know when an album cover is literal! In fact, literal album covers inspired me to make a List of the Day about a year ago, and since then I’ve been telling myself I’d revisit the topic. Today, I do just that. Please enjoy the gallery of ridiculously literal album covers below and leave some of your favorites I’ve missed in the comments.
