20 Great "Live at Paste" Videos

Earlier this week, The Civil Wars played the inaugural Live at Paste in our brand new offices in Decatur, Ga. We’d been there since the beginning of the year, but I don’t think it really felt like home until it was baptized by some lovely live music.

The “Live at Paste” tradition extends back five years, and in the beginning we were recording folks in what was essentially a closet in our old office. I remember staff and interns crowding around folks like Brett Dennen and Duncan Sheik, certainly making them feel both welcome and awkward. We eventually built out a studio with a stage in the back, where we recorded hundreds of performances from some of our favorite artists.

No matter how long we’d been doing it, we still couldn’t believe that folks like Matthew Sweet, Pete Yorn, Joan Osborne and the Indigo Girls would come and play for us—especially when Peter Buck came by with The Baseball Project. But they aren’t playing for us—they’re playing for you guys, our audience. We captured them all for our website, and here are just a few of my favorites (in alphabetical order):

1. Arrested Development – “Tennessee”

It doesn’t matter how small our stage is (or even how small the room is), Speech and Arrested Development just take it over.

2. Bell X1 – “Heaven”
Uploaded: Aug. 29, 2008
The Irishmen cover the Talking Heads on guitar and banjo.

3. Brandi Carlile – “Dreams”
Uploaded: Jan. 5, 2010
Brandi came in on my daughter’s 11th birthday, making for the best present her daddy could have possibly given her.

4. Colin Hay – “Down Under”
Uploaded: Jan. 5, 2010
The Man at Work graciously plays an old hit with a new twist. Stripped down, it’s gorgeous.

5. David Bazan – “Hard to Be”
Uploaded: Jan. 5, 2010
Pedro the Lion has been a favorite of mine since before we had a magazine. Bazan plays a cut from Curse Your Branches.
