5. Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog – Neil Patrick Harris
Written during the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, Joss Whedon’s NPH-starring sinister musical series was one of the first to have success online. The show follows Dr. Horrible as he struggles to balance his life as an evil genius with his love life. His crush is the lovable Felicia Day and his nemesis, Captain Hammer, is played by Nathan Fillion.
4. Always Open – David Koechner
If your creepy uncle sat down for dinner with famous actors at Denny’s, this is probably how it would go. Koechner asks all the tough questions, and the show is at its best when his guests are willing to let things get uncomfortable. Jason Bateman, Sara Silverman, and Will Forte all stop by to chat.
3. The Guild – Felicia Day
Nerd princess Felicia Day writes and stars in this show about the cons of making friends with your keyboard. Day’s character is an avid member of an online RPG community who gets into some trouble when one of her fellow gamers becomes obsessed with her and shows up at her house.
2. Between Two Ferns – Zach Galifianakis
Between Two Ferns is just like any talk show you might watch on network TV. Galifianakis tickles his guests, asks them for their phone numbers, and gets into the occasional slap fight. You know, pretty standard stuff.
1. Drunk History – Derek Waters and others
While probably not even remotely educational, Derek Waters’ Funny or Die series tells history in a way that your high school teachers never could. Actors like Danny McBride, John C. Reilly, and Jack Black star in dramatic interpretations of America’s greatest moments—with the narrative provided by a guest who’s had a bit too much to drink.
