As both a photographer and videographer, I’ve been intrigued by the Animated GIF, as it straddles the middle ground between these two fields. With a bit of preparation, a tripod and a subject to capture, these portraits can grab hidden subtleties within a particular given moment that are lost in translation elsewhere.
At last week’s Pitchfork Music Festival, I decided to recreate live moments of the festival through this process. In addition to all the individual stills I took at the three day festival, I created 15 animated GIFs from the photo pits of Pitchfork—all of which were handheld and captured in a less-than-ideal environment where photographers are packed into a confined space.
