Our 40 Most Anticipated New Movies Coming in 2013
Page 2 of 4
While Awards Season for 2012 films has just begun, we turn our sights forward to the promising slate of movies due out in 2013. Directors like Martin Scorsese, the Coen Brothers, Terrence Malick, J.J. Abrams, Richard Linklater and Joss Whedon all have new movies due out in the next 12 months. The following 40 movies are the ones we’re most excited about—not the ones that will necessarily have the biggest box office draws. They range from indie dramas to smart-looking popcorn blockbusters. They’re presented in calendar order, and we’ll update this list with trailers and release dates as they’re released.
11. Superman: Man Of Steel
Release Date: June 14
Director: Zack Snyder
Stars: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner
Why We’re Excited: Christopher Nolan helped develop this project written by his Dark Knight co-writer David Goyer. And we love the idea of Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
12. Monsters University
Release Date: June 21
Director: Dan Scanlon
Stars: John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Steve Buscemi, Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney
Why We’re Excited: Because we don’t bet against Pixar, even in sequels (at least sequels outside of the Cars universe). This is actually a prequel, looking at Sully and Mike Wazowski’s college days.
13. World War Z
Release Date: June 21
Director: Marc Forster
Stars: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, David Morse, James Badge Dale
Why We’re Excited: The screenplay was adapted by Lost‘s Damon Lindelof from Max Brooks’ excellent zombie novel. And while Brad Pitt tries to keep his family safe, these zombies make 28 Days Later zombies look like Night of the Living Dead zombies.
14. Pacific Rim
Release Date: July 12
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Stars: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day
Why We’re Excited: While it looks like Michael Bay directed the trailer, we have hope that Guillermo del Toro will give us something much more interesting with this tale of giant aliens invading earth through a deep-sea portal. Plus, Idris Elba and Charlie Day?
15. Thor The Dark World
Release Date: July 26
Director: Alan Taylor
Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston
Why We’re Excited: The first Thor was entertaining and Marvel has the wind at its back with the latest round of movies. Kenneth Branaugh will be a tough act to follow, but Alan Taylor directed some of our favorite Game of Thrones episodes, along with shows like Bored to Death and Mad Men.
Release Date: Aug. 9
Director: Neill Blomkamp
Stars: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga
Why We’re Excited: Blomkamp gave us a different kind of sci-fi movie with District 13, and he again looks at the haves and have-nots in a futuristic world where the rich live on a space station and the meek inherit a ruined earth. Plus Matt Damon (mostly) knows how to find a good script.
17. Captain Phillips
Release Date: Oct. 11
Director: Paul Greengrass
Stars: Tom Hanks, Catherine Keener, John Magaro, Max Martini
Why We’re Excited: Paul Greengrass (United 93, the Bourne series) loves to celebrate heroics, and he’s got a gripping true story to work with—Somali pirates and the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two centuries.
Release Date: Oct. 11
Director: Spike Lee
Stars: Josh Brolin, Sharlto Copley, Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson
Why We’re Excited: For the remake of Chan-wook Park’s ultra-violent revenge tale, Spike Lee has enlisted an A-list cast. We didn’t think we needed a Hollywood version, but the people involved have us intrigued.
Release Date: Oct. 18
Director: Luc Besson
Stars: Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianna Agron
Why We’re Excited: Robert De Niro returns to his mafia ways in the latest from director Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, Léon: The Professional, The Fifth Element). The dark action-comedy is set in France where the relocated Manzoni family can’t shake their gangster ways.
20. The World’s End
Release Date: Oct. 25
Director: Edgar Wright
Stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Rosamund Pike
Why We’re Excited: Following Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are together once again as their epic pub crawl transforms into a struggle to save the earth.
