9. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr – Paste Live Sessions NYC
From their appearance at our South by Southwest party in 2011 to a performance in our very own office, we’ve lauded the pair, which consists of Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott, for their synthy sound and dance-friendly live show. We caught up with the duo when they fresh on the heels of the release of their EP Patterns
on a rooftop in Brooklyn, N.Y., for a particularly special performance. The band stripped down their sound to just an acoustic guitar and a small synth to perform “Dark Water,” which ultimately also appeared on full-length Speed of Things
released later this year, peppering the performance with whistles and, of course, their winning harmonies.
8. Mac DeMarco – Live at SXSW
Canadian musician Mac Demarco was on several Paste staffers must-see list as we embarked on the week-long music overdose of SXSW. He’d already snagged a spot as one of our Best New Artists of 2012, and his track “Dreaming” was a year-end favorite. DeMarco delivered exactly the kind of garage-pop that fans would’ve hoped for, peppering the energetic set with musings on the songs themselves.
7. Night Beds – The Riverview Sessions
Another of our Riverview Sessions, filmed in Austin during SXSW, Night Beds played a cover of Broken Social Scene’s “Lover’s Spit,” ultimately fading into their own original track “22” and making for an unforgettable performance.
