Six Insights From an Editor at The Onion
The first-ever headline in The Onion was “Mendota Monster Mauls Madison,” published Aug. 29, 1988 over a picture of a Loch Ness Monster-type creature that was apparently roaming the waterways of Wisconsin. The paper was just a scrappy little weekly at that time, distributed for free around the University of Wisconsin. There was even a coupon on the front page for a Zorba’s gyro. ... read more
The Perfect Seven-Course Multi-Fast-Food-Chain Meal
I generally hate fast food. And I'm really not a fan of chains. I like my food slow, local or homemade. But then there's the chicken finger plate from Zaxby's. And the chicken biscuit at Chick-fil-a. And as much as I hate their burgers, man I love those McDonald's fries. So for all the summer roadtripping we have left to do, here's a guide to what's good on the go.... read more

Five Reasons to Help Emily Richmond Sail Around the World
Last week we told you about the growing number of independent artists turning to Kickstarter to crowdsource funds for the recording of albums, the production of feature films and even the reunion of infamously discordant bands. It's not just traditional creative-types who've flooded the site looking to support their endeavors, though, and of all the offbeat projects up for backing (convert a short bus to hawk Thai food, fund a griddle guide) Emily Richmond's is definitely the most ambitious. The 24-year old currently lives in Los Angeles, but if everything goes as planned, sometime this winter she'll be setting off... read more
Andrew W.K.'s 10 Reasons to Watch the New Cartoon Network Series Starring Andrew W.K., Destroy, Build, Destroy
When we got word that Cartoon Network had greenlit a television show where Andrew W.K. will blow things up with young people on a regular basis, we got pretty excited. So excited, in fact, that we shot Mr. Wilkes-Krier and e-mail asking him to craft a List of the Day about it. Behold, the result:... read more
Back To Middle School: My 20 Favorite Rap Songs Circa 1991
I graduated from elementary school in June of 1990. Almost immediately after, my Dad—who worked for Digital Computers—switched from manufacturing to sales, and my family moved from Marlboro, Mass., to Alpharetta, Ga. I'd already gotten into a little bit of rap music while I was still in New England, listening to more poppy stuff like DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Tone Loc, Young MC, LL Cool J, and even a little Digital Underground. But when I got to Georgia and started at Taylor Road Middle School (which I attended from August 1990 to June 1993), I met some new... read more
Band Names That Sound Too Much Alike
When our esteemed designer Josh Baker heard that Dignan was playing in our studio, he thought Dungen was coming in. Fortunately, both bands are awesome so he wasn’t disappointed—just a little confused. But it got us thinking about other bands with names that are too much alike. Here are our favorites:... read more
Seven Bands Named After People Who Are Not Actually In The Band
A couple days ago, someone told us that the frontman for exciting new band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes is not really named Edward Sharpe. We did not know this, but it seems to be true. And it got us thinking about other bands whose names cause similar confusion. Skynyrd we could explain off the top of our heads. Others, not so much. Anyway, read all about it, and impress your friends—especially if they are nerds—with your newly acquired music-trivia knowledge. ... read more
Eight, Uh, Unique Bits of Harry Potter Merchandise
Movie franchises with notoriously devoted fanbases tend to share similar traits: seemingly endless sequels, at least one highly attractive up-and-coming star, and—most crucially—a vast collection of official and unofficial memorabilia that makes buying birthday gifts for fans an absolute no-brainer. While recent Twilight merchandise really takes the cake (you, too, can glitter like Edward!) the Harry Potter series certainly has its fair share of surprisingly functional, blatantly useless and otherwise head-scratching swag. Here are a few of the most, uh, unique items.... read more
The Definitive All-Time Top 10 Rock 'n' Roll Documentaries List
The art of the rock documentary is a delicate one. A good rockumentary strikes a balance between moving concert footage and revealing backstage confessions, telling a story while illuminating the band's impact on both fans and the cultural zeitgeist. Because they capture a broad swath of culture from such a unique perspective, they are often compelling films, which makes it hard to pick only 10 to call “the best.” Excluding those that are concert films (sorry, Scorcese, but The Last Waltz falls in this category, as well as Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense), here are the definitive top 10 rock... read more
Don't Stop Til You Get Enough: The Best Michael Jackson Tribute Swag on Etsy
In life, Michael Jackson was the King of Pop, but in death he's become something perhaps even more vital for these times: an economic stimulant. His albums have literally been flying off the shelves—well, not literally flying, but literally off the shelves, with physical copies making up 82% of the sales—clinching him eight of the top 10 spots on Billboard's Top Pop Catalog Album chart the week after his death. Even the magazine industry is getting a boost (a much needed one, we gotta admit), and Lord knows how much cash has been poured into MJ tribute merchandise (official and... read more
Five Non-Anatomical Reasons You Should Watch HBO's Hung
HBO's new comedy series Hung chronicles a high-school history teacher who decides to sell sex when he can't afford to give his kid $50 for a concert, among other things. Formidably endowed, he soon finds business. The ratings have been promising, and based on what we've seen so far, here are five reasons you should help keep it that way:... read more
Dead Celebrities Crazy People Insist Are Still Alive But in Hiding
When Michael Jackson died on June 25, it took about five minutes before some looney Internet junkie started blogging about how he's really not dead, he's just hiding. That's right, he faked his own death "to escape the crushing pressures of life in a fishbowl." (Thanks for the quote, Derek Klontz, "herbalist, author and journalist of international reach.")But, of course, as anyone (who's completely certifiably insane and has seen Death Becomes Her too many times) can tell you, MJ wasn't the first celebrity to grow tired of all that fame and money and attention and decide to check out with a forged... read more
Different Songs With The Same Names
There are a lot of songs out there—every artist runs the risk of doubling up on a title or two. Here are some of our favorite songs with the same titles. As you read this list, my fellow editor Steve is writing a song called "Stairway to Heaven" for his band Attractive Eighties Women. And it's not a cover.... read more
Five Musicians Who Should Wash My Car
According to a story broken by the U.K. Guardian and subsequently reported in The States, big-shot director Michael Bay made sexpot actress Megan Fox wash his Ferrari as part of her audition for Transformers. This touching bit of casting news makes us pause and ponder who, in the musical universe, could stand to wash our dashing Pastemobile—the one with the stolen radio and the scratched-up paint. These five artists seem especially well-suited to work a sponge and chamois cloth while we sip lemonade from a shaded lawn chair.... read more
10 Charities to Follow on Twitter
One of the worst effects of our economic downturn is the dip in funding for a number of worthy non-profits. From advocacy groups to homeless shelters, these organizations need every advantage they can find, and Twitter offers an inexpensive way to communicate. If you're in a position to help out—either by funding or by spreading the word—here are 10 charities on Twitter that I highly recommend.... read more
10 Frequently-Challenged Books Everyone Should Read
It should go without saying that, as a publication, we're pretty big fans of that whole freedom-of-speech thing. So, we couldn't help but notice the list of the 100 most frequently challenged books from 1990-2000, as reported by the American Library Association. These are all books that people have tried to keep out of libraries or other public venues because they are somehow deemed "inappropriate" or "dangerous." The whole thing is a little Fahrenheit 451 if you ask us. (Although, oddly, the great book about the dangers of censorship doesn't appear on the list of books people most commonly try... read more
