Christmas Cheer is certainly not your typical holiday album. Then again, the Boxmaster's front-man Billy Bob Thornton is not your typical anything.  From the opening song "My Dreams of Christmas," which explores the well-worn themes of poverty and desperation but without a silver lining; to the song "Christmas in Prison" (the title explains it all) Christmas Cheer takes a somewhat darker, and certainly more redneck perspective on Christmas.
While this may not be the album to share with grandma and the kids, it is a great way to detox from one-too-many cloying Christmas television specials, and sappy greeting cards.

Click above to watch "Worth Keeping" from the Everybodyfields, performed live at the Paste Studio. We think this performance completely substantiates Rachael Maddux's die-hard allegiance to the band.

Julian Koster visits the Paste offices on Carolling tour julian_koster_singing_saw.jpg

It was as still as a "Silent Night" while we waited for Julian Koster of The Music Tapes (ex-Neutral Milk Hotel)—stopping at the Paste studio during his month-long caroling tour—to play his first note on Badger, his nine-year-old singing saw. Nobody breathed. Then Koster put his bow to the bent metal and a tone as pure as snow on a Christmas morning issued from it. He leapt adeptly from pitch to pitch, performing with quiet grace and an endearing sense of humor, several classic holiday tunes from his October release, The Singing Saw at Christmastime.
