We’re really into the idea of one artist respecting another artist enough to recreate their song. A cover song can be a complete disaster (William Shatner’s “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,” anyone?) or a history maker (Hendrix’s “All Along The Watchtower”). The songs above aren’t necessarily our 23 favorite covers ever, but it’s a collection of songs we love performed by artists we love.

The reign of KNATE begins. Much excitement.
At first I thought it was pronounced “kuh-NAH-tay.” I’m kinda glad it’s not.
Congratulations on your new web presence, lady and gentleman.
I look forward to learning about a lot of music that I won’t be able to afford.
You’re going to delete this aren’t you, WebWarrior?
I can’t believe you left off “Across the Universe” by Rufus Wainwright! I dare say it’s better than the original.
nate sure does have some big ears
Comments are only allowed to be 500 words, so verbose me has to split this up into two… 1. Let me first say that you two are collectively the sexiest bloggers in cyberspace.
Secondly, I like the idea of covers too. The Gillian Welch song is a heartrending one, her voice so emotionally inflected.
Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” is good, but in my opinion his cover of Bonnie Prince Billy’s “I See A Darkness” is much more poignant. That’s just me.
2. Thank you so much for NOT including The Corrs’ horrible cover of Ryan Adams’ “When the Stars Go Blue.” But on that note, what about Ryan Adams’ cover of the late great Gram Parsons’ “Return of the Grievous Angel”? Definitely deserves a spot.
Thanks for turning me on to great covers, Knate.
Very good, nice start. Carry on.
Great, now everyone knows about the sweet music note tattoo on my right breast.
I shall not delete yr comment, ee!bow. However, I shall gripe that TV on the Radio’s “Mr. Grieves” was left off the list. For shame!
"Mr.Grieves” was not left off the list...it’s reserved for Vol.2.
As a rule - there can’t be 2 songs from the same artist on a KNATE playlist.
You should hear Austin and Palmer’s cover of “Float On” by Modest Mouse. THAT should be recorded. And added to volume 2.
Bettye LaVette’s cover of Fiona Apple’s “Sleep to Dream” certainly deserves a nod. Really, LaVette’s album “I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise” showcases covers at their finest.
I have always felt that Lyle Lovett’s “Friend Of The Devil” off the Deadicated soundtrack was one great cover song. Just adding my 2 cents. I am looking forward to some more mixes.
Nada Surf’s “If You Leave” rocks harder than a geologist. Rock out Knate.
the jimi hendrix experience “all along the watchtower.” BAMMERS!
Don’t you just hate it when a spambot finds your blog? As for me, ancient egypt pyramids make me trendy boy hair style all over Asian nude males…
