I have a new hobby, a new goal, a new reason to wake up every morning. I’m a RUNNER now. My good friend Lesley and I are training for the Atlanta Thanksgiving Day half marathon. I spent a hundred dollars on a great new pair of shoes, now the ugliest shoes I own. They’re even Mac-compatible. The shoes have a special compartment for an iPod chip—and get this—if you buy all the right equipment, it picks up your pace and chooses music from your library with the right tempo. Amazing!
Nate and his wife Rhea (now my neighbors) are also training for the half marathon. Except I can’t keep up with them. Yet. Or probably ever.
In the interest of full disclosure, there are things about running that I hate. I hate sweating, I hate losing my breath, and I hate having sore muscles. I hate the bright colors of workout clothes, I hate ankle socks, I hate it when my hair falls in my face, and I hate it when my face turns red. I hate blisters. I hate hills.
Enjoy this playlist of songs about running (and a few about walking, because there’s nothing wrong with stopping to walk).
Faster every day,
Kate

Because you and Jason and Nate all talked about running last week, last night I decided to go run myself. For the first time since my freshman year (high school) wellness class.
What I don’t like about running is how it makes me feel like I’m gonna DIE.
What, no Stars of Track and Field in this mix?
Good luck, Kate. It’s a noble if sadistic goal.
No “Running To Stand Still”? That’s one of my favorite U2 songs, and definitely my favorite off The Joshua Tree.
I just had BK’s “Run” in my head. Perhaps it was a sign of what was to come?
"Walk Don’t Run”
Instrumentals need love too.
"Born to Run” is a great addition to any running mix…
"running out” by mates of state....
although i don’t think you could acutally run to it..
Somewhere in the basement I have my own run-themed jam tape (yes, it’s from the ancient epoch of cassette recorders) which I beliee has no ovelap with the one above, although it does have “Born to Run”, which weegipup mentions above. My candidate for hte one you missed: Rolling Stones, “Before They Make Me Run”, from Some Girls. This song perfectly bridges KNAPE’s walk-run ambivalence; the full closer line goes “I’m gonna walk before they make me run.”
