All New Years, All The Time

Knate will be taking a long winter’s break until after the New Year. We’re almost finished with our shopping (I got TOMS Shoes for the men and Le Sportsacs for the women), and ready for the two-day family lovefest that is Dec. 24 and 25. The playlist below is in honor of another year of life. Enjoy the picture above of the Paste family looking…hip. Have a lovely holiday! Until 2007, Kate 1. All Homesongs, All The Time

image not available

I think a lot about the concept of home. It’s hard to say whether your home is where you were born, where you grew up, where you ended up, where you are at the moment, or just your favorite place. Some people have been sure of their home since childhood, and others spend a lifetime trying to find it. The songs below are about going home, leaving home and trying to find a new home. Most of them are pretty bittersweet. If you have a minute, click here to read a gorgeous poem called “The Shrinking Lonesome Sestina” by Miller...  read more

All “Cold Weather,” All The Time

image not available

It’s late December. Thanksgiving has come and gone, my birthday has come and gone (Nov. 30—remember for next year; you can send Vespas to my attention at PASTE: PO Box 1606/Decatur, GA 30031), and the Christmas decorations in Bloomingdales have been up for four months. It should be cold in Georgia. Since it’s NOT, we’ve resorted to blasting the air conditioning in the office so we can wear scarves and hats and saying emphatically “Gosh, it’s downright cold out there!” when we come inside, just to get each other in the spirit. I even emailed West Virginia to see...  read more

All Samurai Cats, All The Time

image not available

I’d like to introduce you to Neko Roshi. He’s our little bundle of joy, named after a Japanese children’s tale about a samurai cat that killed a rat by outsmarting it without having to use violence. Neko Roshi had a hard time last night. He likes to sleep on my roommate Claire’s head, and she’s trying to train him to be independent, so she shut her door when she went to bed. My other roommate Palmer got sick of the cat’s whining/scratching/general late-night annoyingness and locked him in the laundry room. (Sounds harsh, but in Palmer’s defense, the laundry...  read more

All Chill Out Already, All The Time

My weekend was short, sleepless and unproductive, so I’ve been way cranky all day. Sometimes the only thing that gets me out of a bad mood is hiding out and listening to lazy, hazy slow jams. So here I am, sitting on the couch in the Paste lounge, with the playlist below on repeat. This one goes out to all my coworkers who’ve been getting glared at. By me. All day. What songs fix you when you’re cranky? As ever, Kate 1. Brightblack Morning Light “Everybody Daylight” (s/t) 2. Hem “We’ll Meet Along The Way” (Funnel Cloud) 3. Califone...  read more

All Transportation, All The Time, Vol. 3 Automobiles

Here is the newest playlist in our celebration of transportation...AUTOMOBILES!  So, maybe the three Radiohead songs don’t qualify as a celebration of automobiles, but they are necessary. All John Mellencamp songs were disqualified from consideration as well as the following songs: The Cars - “Drive” Gary Numan - “Cars” Tracy Chapman - “Fast Car” Snow Patrol - “Chasing Cars” I’m still on the fence about ZZ Top - “She Loves My Automobile” What are you favorite auotmobile-related songs that we missed? Side A 1. Radiohead – Airbag (OK Computer) 2. The Arcade Fire – No Cars Go (Arcade Fire EP)...  read more

I admit, I’m a holiday music junkie and my holiday music collection is now complete with… Twisted Sister’s “Heavy Metal Christmas (The Twelve Days of Christmas)” from the album, A Twisted Christmas The 12 Days Of Christmas according to Dee Snider: 12 silver crosses 11 black mascaras 10 pairs of platforms 9 tattered t-shirts 8 pentagrams 7 leather jackets 6 cans of hairspray 5 skull earrings 4 quarts of jack 3 studded belts 2 pairs of spandex pants And a tattoo of Ozzie… Here are some more of our faves. All Soothing Songs For Coping With Your Dog’s Separation Anxiety, All The Time

image not available

If you’ve read John Grogan‘s book, Marley & Me, then you know exactly the type of yellow labs I own. The bizarre, panic-stricken fits of separation anxiety are impressive - I’ve lost count how many times I’ve returned home to find the aftermath of one of these destructive rampages. Cell phones, Palm pilots, headphones, duvet covers, pillows, CDs, DVDs, books, magazines (oddly, they usually leave the textured cover of PASTE unscathed...the CD Sampler isn’t so lucky), suitcases, cups, picture frames ... nothing is sacred. These are the times when I call upon the soothing power of music to keep me...  read more

All Transportation, All The Time, Vol. 1 Trains

image not available

The previous KNATE post on driving songs got me thinking about the holidays and all the travelling to see various branches of the family. So, we’ve decided to put together some playlists to celebrate TRANSPORTATION.  Each Friday during the holiday season we will highlight a different TRANSPORTATION topic....today is TRAINS. Ok, I admit, this is an easy one. Smithsonian Folkways Recordings released a great Classic Railroad Songs compilation on this very topic. Really, can you be considered a true songwriter if you haven’t written a song about trains? Here are some of our favorite train-related songs: 1. Drive-By Truckers -...  read more

All Go-To Songs, All The Time

image not available

So, of all the Paste staffers, I have the longest daily commute to and from Paste World Headquarters. This is a good thing because I can spend some quality time alone with my ipod....which brings me to today’s topic: The Go-To Song. The Go-To Song is a very personal thing. It’s the song you can listen to on repeat for the entire duration of your commute. It’s the song that begs you to sing along as loud as possible ignoring the frightened looks of the driver in the car next to you. But, it’s not a Go-To Song unless you...  read more

All Rodents, All The Time

My roommates and I live in a lovely house in Kirkwood, Atlanta. We keep it tidy and never leave crumbs on the floor. We close windows and doors. But a rat came anyway. Maybe because our house is warm during the cold months. Maybe because we’re so inviting. Maybe because he couldn’t resist my fabulous green couch. Or maybe because we have a big, wet basement with lots of clothes to eat and a hole in the wall that leads to the house. Who knows? The rat first appeared in my roommate’s chamber. Since we hadn’t locked eyes, it didn’t...  read more

All Rag-top Down So My Hair Can Blow, All The Time

Jack Keourac this...Jack Keourac that… The allure of the open road was captured best by the poet, Robert Van Winkle: “Rollin’ in my 5.0, with my rag-top down so my hair can blow, girlies on stand-by waiting just to say hi, (Did you stop) No, I just drove by...” Girlies on stand by? Vanilla doesn’t care, he just wants to drive. These are a few songs that inspire us to...just drive. Let’s cruise, KNate 1. Blind Melon “Drive” (Blind Melon) 2. All Technology, All The Time (Please give us an RSS feed, Brian!)

image not available

I have another confession to make. I don’t really know exactly what an RSS feed is. But I do know that we want one. So our beloved technology architect Brian Gorby has made a little deal with Knate. If we make an “All Technology, All The Time” playlist, he’ll enable the feed. So enjoy this list of songs that involve technology. This one’s for you, Brian. PLEASE GIVE US AN RSS FEED. We’re trying to include at least one free song every day, so check back often! And as always, add to our list in the comments section. Technologically yours,...  read more

All Radio On The TV, All The Time

You may have noticed that some pretty awesome songs have been getting placed in commercials lately, thanks to edgy music supervisors (and the fact that people are finally sick of Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride”). For those of you who don’t watch TV, skip the commercials, or spend your weekends laid up on the couch watching Antiques Roadshow reruns courtesy of commercial-free broadcasting, we’re happy to summarize what you’re missing. We say sell out, schmell out. The songs below are great, and we’re glad these lovely artists are benefiting from commercials. 1. Modest Mouse “Gravity Rides Everything” (Nissan) 2 .Iron and...  read more

All First-name Basis, All The Time

Calling someone by his or her first name isn’t merely a sign of informality—it’s a sign of comfort. There’s a certain level of ease between people on a first-name basis. For example, I usually call Nate “Nate,” but when he’s trying to put Nine Inch Nails on the playlist and thus making me feel uncomfortable, I call him “Mr. Douglas” or “Mean Jerk.” We hope you enjoy our sampling of wonderful songs that involve first names. Meanwhile, the first person to write a song called “Knate” wins a Frisbee. Ready, break! Yours truly, Ms. Kiefer and Mr. Douglas 1. Leonard...  read more

All Sadness, All The Time (Nate’s out of town, let’s go crazy!)

I have a confession to make. Nate’s in New York, and I’ve hijacked the blog. While Nate was eating bagels, buying records and clinking glasses with Kiefer Sutherland, I put together a small collection of my favorite kind of songs—depressing ones. Have fun with this installment of All Sadness, All The Time. Next week, KNATE will return with a healthy balance of life-changing tear jerkers (yay) and soulless foot tappers (boo). All Sadness, All The Time, Vol. 1 1. Yo La Tengo “Tears Are In Your Eyes” 2. Billy Bragg & Wilco “At My Window Sad And Lonely” 3. Josh...  read more
