Georgia On My Mind

Sweet Talk

From the brain flow of Paste's Editor At Large:

Some nefarious music hounds from Decatur twisted my outsized ego into creating a dialogue littered with opinionated recommendations and myopic rants. Therefore, to put a smidgen of decency back into nepotism, I have stolen the title "Sweet Talk" in homage of my father who had a weekly sports and leisure column of the same in the early 70's that was syndicated in several small town newspapers in the land the gods made great, New England (sans Connecticut of course). Luckily this space will focus more on sporting leisure, my favorite kind.

Most of the Sweet Talk Community knows that Brother George works the dusty groove desk with reckless abandon, scouring the bins for signs of life.  He has succeeded once again by professing his love of Georgia Anne Muldrow.  A break beat goddess with pipes, Muldrow is not for the faint of heart.  If Sharon Jones and D’ Angelo were to ever fuse like a soulfood version of All of Me you might come close to capturing her peanut butter sound. With a pinch of Sun Ra and a twinkle of Sa - Ra Muldrow’s overlaid harmonies burrow holes into any predisposed R&B expectations while her beats hit you like sucker punches to the solar plexus. Building all her own tracks she burgles elements of Jazz and Hip-Hop to erect a stone cold bridge to the future of funk fusion. Throwing out the templates of Lauryn Hill and Erica Badu, Muldrow at age 23 has embarked on a trail all her own and we would all do well to follow her into the great musical unknown.
