Sweet Talk

From the brain flow of Paste's Editor At Large:

Some nefarious music hounds from Decatur twisted my outsized ego into creating a dialogue littered with opinionated recommendations and myopic rants. Therefore, to put a smidgen of decency back into nepotism, I have stolen the title "Sweet Talk" in homage of my father who had a weekly sports and leisure column of the same in the early 70's that was syndicated in several small town newspapers in the land the gods made great, New England (sans Connecticut of course). Luckily this space will focus more on sporting leisure, my favorite kind.

Ever since my buddy Burton turned me and my sons on to the inimitable and highly addictive family show, Pancake Mountain, it has been one of my goals to be interviewed by Rufus, the cotton swab lamb who has a penchant for chilling with some solid music peeps.

My desire to hang with a hand puppet has nothing to do with easing some deep rooted childhood neurosis, it has to do with impressing my three year old son.  You see Go-Go Sweet has had the good fortune to have had tea at the Ritz with ?uestlove, lunch with Elvis Costello, Gillian Welch, and Amy Poehler, and G. Love teach him how to strum a guitar, but yet none of this instills the same wonderment and awe him as seeing Rufus.  It makes sense for while Dan Zanes maybe the Beatles of kid’s music, Rufus is the Stones and Zeppelin all rolled into one.

So imagine my good fortune to be hanging with Wayne Coyne backstage at Bonnaroo when he was asked to join a sing along with Rufus, who was feeling a bit down after a booze infested Lilly Allen buzz-killed the great times.  I say good fortune because not only did my buddy Cochran, Andrew Barr (The Slip), a overly patriotic flamenco dancer, and I get to be so close to the action, but Rufus asked us to join in the chorus of “Daydream Believer”.

Go-Go Sweet is so impressed he keeps asking for me to sing “Daydream Believer” every morning at breakfast, which I guess is a good thing?

Enjoy:
