Nice list of favorites...I especially like the addition of Peter Case and Anders Osborne. Kudos for including Graham Parker, too…
I thought for sure The Avett Brothers - Emotionalism would make your list. At least an Honorable Mention.
Amy, I agree. I think “Emotionalism” is a remarkable album. It’s self-loathing taken to a high art form. So count it as an oversight on my part.
I’m a little surprised myself that Over the Rhine’s delightful “The Trumpet Child” didn’t get anywhere on the list either.
Andy,I wish Wilco’s other recent albums were as “disappointing” as Sky Blue Sky. Then again, I always preferred the Dead’s studio albums twice as much. You missed Rilo Kiley and Laura Viers.
Andy, you forgot Mark Olson’s Salvation Blues. You love that album—even if you didn’t hear it.
Also, kudos for your opinion of Sky Blue Sky. I couldn’t agree more.
What about Foo Fighters’ Echoes, Silence, etc?
I adamantly disagree with you on Sky Blue Sky and so do most critics! It’s a tremendous album--a departure from their last album--yes, but so is every one of their albums. This is their most accessible album yet---which might be why you didn’t like it. I’m a huge YHF fan but this is right up there with that one for me.
ok, one more thing---I’m glad your own magazine disagreed with you on Sky Blue Sky:

It’s okay, Doug. You’re allowed to like “Sky Blue Sky.” I don’t dislike it. But I don’t think Tweedy is the masterful songwriter he is made out to be in many places, including Paste. This is why I have my own mind, and my own set of ears. Glad you have both as well.
Thanks for replying, Andy. it’s funny how one can get very defensive about musical tastes--i was pondering that this evening while listening to Wilco among other things. This album helped me through a very shitty year in some ways, my sons enjoy it--my wife even likes it (her tastes often diverge from mine). i also got to see them in concert---a rare treat for this relatively poor social worker who brings in much of the income…
so, it’s likely hard for me to be real objective about wilco.
