How Of Monsters and Men Became The Next Big Thing

Last summer, I came across a song that I immediately fell in love with, “From Finner,” by a then-little-known band from Iceland called Of Monsters and Men. Tracking down the band was tough, but we wanted to do a Best of What’s Next piece, which eventually became a feature in our International Issue last September.

At the end of last year, we named them one of the Best New Bands of 2011, but I wasn’t prepared for the mob scene inside and outside of our party at SXSW. The room was packed with attentive fans and lines stretched in both directions down 6th Street in Austin, hoping to get in. Their sound fits in nicely with bands like Mumford & Sons and The Head and the Heart, who’ve had great success in the last two years, and Of Monsters and Men look to follow in those footsteps.

Icelander Bo Olafsson has put together a slide show showing how the band went from unknowns to the next big thing—before they played their first show in the U.S. You can check it out below and check out that first Paste feature (and listen to “From Finner”) here.
