UnhappyHipsters.com (Awesome of the Day)
It’s lonely in the modern world. At least, that’s the philosophy behind Unhappy Hipsters, a tumblr blog capturing the melancholy of urban design. The blog was started by two women, a writer and a graphic designer, who wish to remain anonymous.... read more
Kevin Barnes working on "Enemy Gene" (Awesome of the Day)
We live in strange and wonderful times, these, when a former Paste cover artist (in this case, the now-bearded Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes) can sit at his piano with a video camera, work on a song fragment (“Enemy Gene”) and share it immediately with his fans via Twitter (“Working on something new. http://tinyurl.com/yb24n2j”). It’s a lovely tune and interesting glimpse into what Barnes is up to musically these days, other than a song for Beyonce. We haven’t heard “He’sMyPartyDrug” yet, but we imagine it sounds nothing like this:... read more

"Single Ladies"/Andy Griffith Mash-Up (Awesome of the Day)
Imma let you finish, but this is one of the best Beyoncé-related mash-ups of all time. San Francisco producer/remixer/DJ Party Ben, who’s also mashed up T.I. with Vampire Weekend, introduced Barney Fife to all the single ladies a little over a year ago, but if, like me, you haven’t seen it before today, here you go…... read more
The Three Great Words of Lost (Awesome of the Day)
As we count down the days until the final of Season of Lost premieres (appropriately on Groundhog Day) by preemptively protesting Presidential speech scheduling and trying to remember all the things we’re still confused about, YouTube makes the waiting a little easier with plenty of Lost montage clips. In addition to great Sawyer quotes and nicknames, here are The Three Great Words of Lost:... read more
Free Dead Confederate Live LP (Awesome of the Day)
Athens band Dead Confederate is offering a free download of their new LP, Dirty Ammo. You can also pay $1, which the band will donate to help rebuild The Georgia Theater, the Athens landmark which burned down in June. All seven tracks of the album’s grungy Southern rock were recorded at The Earl in Atlanta in May 2009. In addition to four live versions of previously released songs, Dirty Ammo includes one new song, “Guns” and covers of Elliot Smith’s “Roman Candle” and Officer May’s “Smoking a Minor.”... read more

Silent Monks Do The Halleluia Chorus (Awesome of the Day)
Back in the early ‘90s when Paste president Tim Regan-Porter and I were working on his ’zine Art Clippings, we came up with a fake interview with the Benedictine Monks where every question was met with silence. We thought it was hilarious. But what’s actually funny is this high school group doing the “Halleluhiah Chorus” silent-monk-style. (Thanks to Joe Kirk for the tip.)... read more
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros "Home" Sung By Ugandan Widows (Awesome of the Day)
Back in July, when Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros held an album release party for their debut LP Up From Below, they raised money to help the Gulu Widows Group of Uganda start a farm to sustain their community. After the first harvest, they celebrated by singing the band’s song “Home.”... read more

St. Bernardus Christmas Ale (Awesome of the Day)
There’s so much to love about the Christmas season, but between chopping down Douglas firs and watching A Christmas Story marathons, don’t forget to enjoy some of the best seasonal ales. I kicked off December at The Brickstore in Decatur, which had several great Winter beers on tap to choose from. I love the Scaldis Noël and the Corsendonk Christmas, but I chose to get into the holiday spirit with the very best—a St. Bernardus Christmas Ale.... read more
Slingers Sizzle Reel (Awesome of the Day)
It’s not an existing TV show. It’s not even a pilot. Creator Mike Sizemore is still putting the finishing touches on that, as well as starting to write the first six episodes. But there’s a sizzle reel. And it looks freaking awesome. It takes place in the Swinging Sixties—2263, to be precise. With a tagline, “Getting home – one heist at a time,” it looks like a futuristic Ocean’s Eleven, and may be the first show set in space since Battlestar Galactica that could reach beyond a sci-fi audience if it finds the right network.... read more

FIFA 10 (Awesome of the Day)
Considering how quickly and fully my love for all things soccer has developed, there’s really only one word to describe it: obsession. It started with a trip to Manchester this summer for the Manchester International Festival. I’d expected everyone I met to be a Manchester United fan, since it’s the most famous football club in the world. But my hosts—and nearly everyone I met—said they followed Manchester City instead, that Man U was for the tourists. That settled it right there. I was a Man City fan. The season started soon after, and I realized I could watch most of... read more

Part of the beauty of subscribing to McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern is never knowing what to expect. The one-off broadsheet, called the San Francisco Panorama will feature 32 pages of news, 24 pages of sports, 16 pages of comics and 16 pages of food, all on high-quality newsprint in an apparent effort to rub the noses of newspaper men and women across the nation in what they’ve lost.... read more
